See above! I think if I had read this rather than listened to Bill Homewood's narration I wouldnt have made it through the book. What does Bill Homewood bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book? At the beginning of the story you have him in your head as one of the bad guys, but you learn to love him. I cant fully explain why but I truly loved Noirtier. I started speaking like a 19th century french after a few days listening. He can immerse you and drag you in to the story in a way no other narrator has ever done (for me anyway). You instantly recognise each character the minute he start's speaking. What made the experience of listening to The Count of Monte Cristo the most enjoyable?īill Homewood's narration of the book is phenomenal. It is also a good length for travelling long distances! This book is my favourite 'go to' when I want a classic, well written, proper yarn that engages. Without giving anything away, the pulling together of the threads of story at the end of the novel is gripping. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? This is my first experience of listening to a performance by Bill Homewood, and he clearly defined each character and gave emphasis and appropriate emotion to the narrative. Have you listened to any of Bill Homewood’s other performances? How does this one compare? The development of the principle character, Edmund Dantes, is intriguing and compelling. It is beautifully written and captures me every time. This book is a timeless yarn that completely engages the listener and pulls you into it's web of narrative. Having read this several times, I decided to give listening a try. Like all other forms of income, unrealized capital gains income can be tapped to finance consumption and can improve financial wellbeing.Ī common reference point for defining income in economics is known as Haig-Simons income. However, it matters greatly for the wealthiest families for whom such unrealized and thus untaxed gains are a large share of their income. Measuring income in this more comprehensive manner matters relatively little for estimating most families’ tax rates, as most families have few investment assets. Preferred tax rates on income from stock sales (“realized capital gains income”) and from dividends feature prominently in commonly cited tax rates as well as in our analysis.Īn important feature of our analysis that is less common in existing estimates of tax rates is that we include untaxed (“unrealized”) capital gains income in our more comprehensive income measure as they accrue. If a wealthy investor never sells stock that has increased in value, those investment gains are wiped out for income tax purposes when those assets are passed on to their heirs under a provision known as stepped-up basis.Īnalyzing a more comprehensive measure of income Second, the wealthy can choose when their capital gains income appears on their income tax returns and even prevent it from ever appearing. In particular, income from dividends and from stock sales is taxed at a maximum of 20 percent (23.8 percent including the net investment income tax), which is much lower than the maximum 37 percent (40.8 percent) ordinary rate that applies to other income. First, much of their income is taxed at preferred rates. The wealthy pay low income tax rates, year after year, for two primary reasons. How the wealthy enjoy low income tax: preferred rates on an incomplete measure of income This analysis asks: what was the average Federal individual income tax rate paid by the 400 wealthiest American families’ in recent years, determined using a more comprehensive measure of income? Yet the most common estimates of tax rates do not fully capture the value of this tax benefit because they use an incomplete measure of income. Investment gains are a primary source of income for the wealthy, making this preferential treatment of investment gains a valuable benefit for the wealthiest Americans. But when they gain a dollar because their stocks increase in value, that dollar is taxed at a low preferred rate, or never at all. When an American earns a dollar of wages, that dollar is taxed immediately at ordinary income tax rates. The President’s proposals mitigate two key contributors to the low estimated rate: preferential tax rates on capital gains and dividend income, and wealthy families’ ability to avoid paying income tax on capital gains through a provision known as stepped-up basis. We also present sensitivity analyses that yield estimates in the 6-12 percent range. In our primary analysis, we estimate an average Federal individual income tax rate of 8.2 percent for the period 2010-2018. We do so using publicly available statistics from the IRS Statistics of Income Division, the Survey of Consumer Finances, and Forbes magazine. Installing a subpanel can save you in multiple ways. Otherwise, your breaker will constantly trip off. You won’t require a sub-panel if you have only light bulbs and wall sockets.īut, if you want to run heavy appliances like the drill or any other device with a high wattage, you need to install the sub panel. The type of equipment and appliance you use inside the shed will determine whether you need a subpanel or not. The regular breakers power specific areas’ outlets, and the main breaker powers these breakers.īut, if you have a shed outside your house, then a breaker is inadequate to supply power to the outlets of that building.Ī sub-panel is the secondary power supply electrical box that distributes electricity to the outlets in another building outside your house. The amount of current allowed is determined by bringing in the largest service entrance conductors from the main panel to feed this sub-panel. It’s important to use thick enough wires that can handle the amperage and voltage being sent through them. When it comes to wiring a 100 Amp Sub Panel, the wire size should be #2 copper or #1 aluminum. A 100 amp sub panel should be installed with a 100 amp double-pole breaker in the main panel.Wires should be secured with twist-on wire connectors. All wires should be copper and rated for use in wet or dry locations.

There is a natural pause after a sentence. Make an impact – You can use short, truncated sentences to create punch and make a point. Reinforce what’s being said – A truncated sentence can place emphasis on a previous statement or sentence. Think of the importance of sentence structure – short, simple sentences or truncated sentences can create tension, haste or urgency, whereas longer compound or complex sentences are slower, and often feature in formal texts. When it comes to communicating, sometimes less is more. For example, “Let’s go!” creates a sense of urgency, whereas the longer “Let’s go now because the shops will be shutting in half an hour” doesn’t. But what other reasons are there for using truncated sentences?Ĭreate tension, haste or urgency – We talk about a short, sharp shock – when we shorten our communication, we give it power. The above example shows us that truncated sentences can be used to make communication more casual and conversational. “I like reading books more than Diane likes reading books” Why use a truncated sentence? Take a look at these examples and read them aloud – and think about the effect created by shortening the sentence: Here there’s no need for the word “does” to be used in order for the meaning of the sentence to be understood, so the writer or speaker has removed it – in this case, because it’s a more casual, conversational way to express how they feel about reading.Ī good way to understand the effects of a truncated sentence is to extend the sentence by adding the words that are missing, and comparing the extended version to the truncated one. However, the second sentence is truncated, as it has been shortened. A truncated sentence has to have been cut short – there need to be words missing. Truncated sentences are often referred to as short sentences, but there is a difference between short sentences and truncated sentences. Get started for free What is a truncated sentence? Improve your English grammar, vocabulary and more with EF English Live. We’re going to take a closer look at truncated sentences now, and explain what they are, why you might want to use them, and how you can you use them to improve your English skills. Truncated sentences pop up a lot in everyday speech too, although they can cause some confusion when used incorrectly. Be it in a novel, play or poem, writers know that truncated sentences can have a range of effects, and they use them on purpose, often to grab our attention. Why do people cut sentences short? Truncated sentences are used for a variety of reasons in both spoken and written English. When you cut something short you truncate it, and you can truncate many things – including sentences. Shorten (something) by cutting off the top or the end. When the Internet Archive completes its processing, which includes rigorous quality assurance procedures, each item enters the vast Internet Archive online library and becomes fully discoverable and searchable through its website. After the non-destructive scanning process, library staff reshelve the physical volumes. Specifically, Princeton librarians select content for digitization in alignment with the library’s collection development policy, gather the selected physical volumes, and deliver both the volumes and their accompanying catalog records to the Internet Archive scanning center. No digitization is performed by way of Princeton staff or equipment instead, all digitization is performed in the on-site scanning center staffed, equipped, and operated independently by the Internet Archive. Through ongoing funding from Princeton Theological Seminary, the library routinely submits public domain print materials for digitization through the Internet Archive. Several other institutions that had joined the Microsoft initiative took a similar approach and have continued to partner with the Internet Archive to digitize large quantities of materials from their public domain holdings. The Internet Archive continues to operate a regional scanning center housed in Princeton’s library. Thus began a fruitful partnership that continues to the present time. Recognizing the importance of the broader effort and remaining committed to its vision for a globally accessible digital library that includes theology and related fields, Princeton Theological Seminary decided to move its digital efforts forward by retaining its relationship with the Internet Archive, a non-profit organization dedicated to building a free, open, and well preserved digital library. However, after only a few months, in May 2008, Microsoft abruptly ended the program, leaving Princeton and the other participants to consider how or whether to proceed without outside financial support. Other institutions joining in Microsoft’s ambitious program included the British Library, Columbia University, Cornell University, the New York Public Library, the University of California, the University of Toronto, and Yale University. This project aligned perfectly with Princeton’s vision of extending worldwide access to its historical collections, as a means of contributing to the shape of a global digital library in which theological disciplines would be represented. The goal was to digitize thousands of volumes on theology and religion for inclusion in Microsoft’s Live Search Books service (which was Microsoft’s answer to Google Books). Project funding would come from Microsoft, materials would come from Princeton’s print collections, and digitization would be performed by the Internet Archive in a scanning center located in Princeton’s library. In early 2008, Princeton Theological Seminary entered into an agreement with Microsoft to digitize public domain (pre-1923) print materials.
